Inversion Vaginoplasty Surgery

How is Inversion Vaginoplasty Performed?

Dr. Schechter’s method of vaginoplasty utilizes the inversion vaginoplasty and disassembly technique combined with a scrotal-perineal flap to create the vagina. This technique uses the penile skin and a portion of the scrotum to line the new vagina. The clitoris is created from both a portion of the glans penis, as well as small amount of retained erectile tissue. This technique preserves important sensory nerves and erectile tissue in order to achieve a natural appearing, sensate vagina with adequate depth for intercourse. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and depending upon the extent of surgery, can last anywhere from 5 to 8 hours. Occasionally, skin grafts are required in order to achieve adequate vaginal depth. Your consultation will determine whether or not a skin graft is necessary.

How Long is Vaginoplasty Recovery?

The typical hospital stay for gender confirmation surgery is five to seven days, including the day of surgery. While recovery times vary, you should expect to be in the area for seven to ten days with a minimum of six weeks until you may return to work.

Are there any Prerequisites for Inversion Vaginoplasty Surgery?

Prior to surgery patients must obtain two mental health evaluations which specifically recommend gender confirmation. These evaluations must be performed by psychiatrists, psychologists, or therapists. In addition, a letter is required from your physician outlining the history and duration of your hormone therapy.  You can learn more about pre surgical requirements here

Prior to surgery, Dr. Schechter will review your medical history and coordinate lab work. At the time of your evaluation, you will be interviewed, undergo a history and physical examination, sign consent forms, have your photographs taken, and receive instructions.
