Body Contouring

Body Contouring After Weight Loss

Following a large weight loss, whether a result of surgery or diet and exercise, extra skin may be present. The extra skin may cause both functional problems (skin irritation and ulcers) as well as aesthetic concerns (difficulty finding clothing, embarrassment, etc…). Common areas of concern include the abdomen (tummy area), back, chest, thighs, and arms.

Treatment for the extra skin may involve a combination of removal of the extra skin (excision) and liposuction. If several body areas need treatment, surgery may involve a staged approach. Most procedures are performed under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Following surgery, compression garments are often worn for several weeks to minimize swelling.
